As a young girl, I remember Blue Peter covering the story, and I think Newsround which is the BBC's children's news show. The story was about a family harvesting their crop of spaghetti from the trees on their farm. Panorama ran a documentary about the family and followed them through the harvesting process and how the spaghetti went to market. Given that this story was one huge April Fool's hoax, and ran in 1957, it is still regarded as one of the greatest hoaxes of all time. The docu-spoof can be viewed here..........

ReplyDeleteI remember the Spaghetti Tree hoax too. In fact, whenever anyone says "April Fool", I always have a mental picture of the spaghetti tree - even though it was well before I was born. I have seen stories about that hoax on the TV - Blue Peter did an article once, about their various April Fool jokes and this was included.
Do you also remember the Panda Eggs?
Ah yes - I remember this one (though it was just before my time) - the greatest example of an April Hoax ever! Going to look up Panda Eggs now thanks to Lizzie!

I remember my Dad roaring with laughter. I was amazed because Panorama was not a funny programme - and Richard Dimbleby was not known for his humorous chat. Goodness me that was a long time ago!!

Even though this story happened the year before I was born, it must have been shown on tv many times since as I can see it so clearly. It's strange how some stories can really trick people. Thanks for reminding us of this one!
