Words.

In my job, we have alot of emails which come through that I normally scan and discard because they're not appropriate for me to read. Sometimes I get something though which jumps out and says ''Hey come and see what this is all about''. Today I got such an email. It was actually a link to a site called Matador Network which seems to be a travel, chat and learn everything kind of site. What jumped out at me was the title ''20 Awesome untranslatable words from around the world''. I mean come on as a scrapbooker words are central to our work so this sounded not only intriguing but fun.
So here are a couple which struck me:

Tartle..................this is a Scottish word which means ''The act of hesitating while introducing someone because you've forgotten their name''. Oh dear yes, I do that quite often. Normally at work when I recognise the baby but can't remember mum's name, sorry lovely lady clients.

Cafune.......................this is a Brazilian Portuguese word meaning ''the act of tenderly running your fingers through someone's hair''. This I love doing and having done to me but it doesn't happen enough.

Mamihlapinatapei........................language of Tierra del Fuego meaning ''the wordless but meaningful look shared by 2 people who both desire to initiate something but are both reluctant to start''. Ah yes, I can just us all writing this somewhere on a LO.

I am now going to have to find a picture to do a LO about one of these words. Isn't language amazing?

  3. Yes! Language is wonderful, colourful, exciting, full of adventure... I Love Words - more even than I love books and paper!
Thanks for sharing these, Jo - they're Ace!

(oh, and I have that "remember the baby's name, but not the mummy" problem... When I ran a toddler group, I often had to say "Freddie's Mummy" or "Sarah's Mummy" because I just couldn't remember the mum's name... Saaaaad!)
