Onwards and upwards bloghop x

Happy Mayday. I am off later to watch the children dancing around the Maypoles on the Cathedral Green. As I write this it is a lovely sunny day so I hope it will stay that way while they dance with their colourful ribbons.

I wanted to let you know that this Friday at 6pm I am taking part in Jennifer Grace's Onwards and upwards bloghop. It is only a small part of a weekend of fun and crafting on her blog. There will be tutorials, giveaways, guests and crafting galore. The last weekend she did was an enormous success and Jennifer always kindly makes up a pdf of all the things she and her guests have completed which she makes available after the weekend is over.

OK so I decided for my blog post I would like to try something I have never made before so I have made some Salt Dough Ornaments. I have seen some lovely ideas in magazines and books over the years but still no tried it so here goes. I got the recipe and instructions from Katy's blog here. She clearly describes how to make the salt dough so I won't go into that part. Suffice to say if you a mixer it's easy, then you knead for all you're worth for 5-10 minutes and then go for the cutting out part. I decided to make a star shaped garland and then several Christmassy shapes including an angel, reindeer, bell etc. I made extras as I wasn't too sure how the shapes would turn out.

While they were cooking, I checked to make sure they weren't cremating in there and found that several of the holes I'd made had closed up. I tried re-making the holes but they still closed off so next time I will have to make them bigger I think. Also some of the shapes went puffy which I think gives them character but if you want them perfectly flat, making thinner shapes seemed to work best.

Anyway once they wer dried, I chose to try two finishes on the shapes: decopatch and paint.

Decopatch is brilliant as you use a special glue/sealer and that saves you having to use any varnish. I found a red Christmas design in my local shop and cut up the paper into tiny squares. Then you just glue and add shapes until the ornament is covered. And here are the five decorations which just need the hangers adding which will be gold ribbon. The material is from my fave fabric store Millie Moon.

The other shapes I firstly painted with white gesso. As the shapes are quite water absorbent I thought having a primed layer would help the paint adhere and also make the shapes more durable.Here they are all ready for the next stage...........................

Sadly, the finished version will involve a second blog post as my local shops had no metallic paint intil today and there is no time to complete the project. Safe to say I hope it will be lovely once complete. The shapes will be painted gold and red and then the next part involves gold ribbons and a hoop plus some bells. Changes at blogger.

So did anyone else think ''Oh no!!!'' when the message kept coming up on blogger saying ''In April we will be upgrading''? No, well I did. The last few times Blogger has done stuff the sites have kept crashing and it has caused problems with uploading posts and pictures for example. Anyway I have been pleasantly surprised by the changes, which initially appearing simple, have given a better insight into my blog traffic particularly.
Did anyone else take Shimelle's 2 classes on blogging? Well I did and in the second classes she went through the whole process of talking us through using our blog statistics using Google. It was fascinating to see where people were visiting from......................my visitors are primarily from America, Canada, UK and Australia, but there are the odd unusual countries like Russia and Asia too. Not that they are unusual countries per se but that I never thought I would have visitors from there. There are cool graphs of how many visitors you get each day, where from, and pretty piecharts.

So the changes to blogger have meant that you can now see all your statistics with your blog page and don't need to hop and skip across the blogosphere looking for another site. One place this has been really interesting is in the comments section. In the old days it just showed how many comments you had received, now there is also a lovely number showing you how many people have actually visited as well but not commented. Now I love a good comment and I do try to comment on each blog I visit cos I feel if you visit someone you should at least send a thank you card as it were. So it is lovely to see that a lot of people do come and visit even if they don't leave feedback.
Now this links very neatly into a little advert for the lovely Abi at ''Creating Paper Dreams''. She wrote last week on this subject specifically and about this Thursday having a bloghop of sorts where everyone makes a BIG commitment to commenting on the blogs they visit. She is calling it Operation Speak Out.......So here is a link to her post for you to read.

February OLW Blog hop.

Welcome to the February edition of One Little Word Bloghop. You may have arrived here from Erin's lovely blog, if you didn't then pop on over and check it out. This is my first time hopping and there alot of blogs to get through today, so without further ado I will tell you what I have been up to.

You may recall this post where I explained about my choice of word which this year is ''BE''. I began making an embroidery of that word a few weeks ago and here is the big reveal.

So here is my completed embroidery and I made it into a wall hanging which is softly stuffed. I had some vintage type lace which I have edged the design with and everything was handstitched together. I have mainly used french knots, chain stitch, satin stitch and cross stitch in the design along with a variety of different beads. I added in the flowers because I wanted to have a butterfly and a bee in the mix.

Here is a close up of the bee which is cross stitched and has gold beads for the wings. The back stitch is just to define the shape.

Here is a closeup of the bottom corner with a butterfly cross stitched and Frnech knots and lazy daisy flowers. The red heart in the B is also French knots. These are very easy stitches and fill the space quickly.

On the E I used fewer flowers and there is more beadwork and French knots.

The metallic thread outlining the E is held using couch stitch and then edged with further chain stitch. I really enjoyed making this piece and it has inspired my love of embroidery again.

Let's Eat Bloghop....................

Welconme to Somerset, your next leg of the bloghop itinerary. You should have travelled about 75 miles West from the lovely Anne who not only is a fab cook but is cooking her own little ''bun in the oven''.............she's having her first baby in January, awwwwww. 3 cheers for her and her hubbie.

So hope you enjoyed your food over there. We are making something from leftovers on our blog as it is part of my family makeup. When I was a child, the Sunday roast always denoted what our meal would be on Monday and probably Tuesday if the mear stretched. If it was roast beef then it was Cottage pie if it was Lamb Shepherd's pie, if it was pork I cant remember, but if it was chicken it was always Chicken rissoles. I can remember my mum cooking these as if it was yesterday so it is her recipe book I have raided for this old family treat.

Chicken or turkey croquetttes

Ingredients:

225-275g/8-10oz cooked chicken or turkey

1 small onion

25g/1oz plain flour

salt and black pepper

25g/1oz butter

125ml/1/4pint chicken stock or milk

1 egg

toasted breadcrumbs

Method:

Chop finely or mince cold chicken or turkey. 

Peel and finely chop the onion. 

Melt butter in a saucepan and add onion.  Cover and cook gently for 5 miinutes (don't allow to brown).

Stir in flour and cook for 2 minutes.  Then add stock or milk and bring to the boil, stirring all the time to make a thick sauce. Add salt and pepper.

Take pan off heat and beat thoroughly to get a smooth mixture.

Add chicken/turkey and mix well.

Separate egg and add yolk to mixture.

Cover pan and set aside until cold.

Take tablespoons of mixture and with wetted hands form rounds about 1/2inch thick

Brush with egg white and roll in breadcrumbs.

Fry in a little butter or olive oil for 5-8 minutes, turning once.

Favourite with children.  Freeze well
Noiw my mum used to do a dip into egg then flour rather than breadcrumbs and we had them with mashed potato and peas,.........mmmmmmmmmmmmmhhhhhhhh. I hope you enjoy them as much as me. 


I love cooking myself and still cling to my childhood faves like the one above. My mum still has the old mincer she put the beef into to make Shepherd's pie and the same cookbook she was given back in the 60s. They do say the oldies are the best. I hope that my recipe favourites stand the test of time and get passed down to my friend's children and so forth.

11 years ago today I was.........................

Hopping over to Sian's today was exciting in two ways, first she always has something fun and interesting to share and today she shared some cute knitted doggies, one of which is a Westie and I loooooooooove Westies, secondly cos she had some cool new bloggie places to visit. Through this one, I found Location Central. If you find your State or country u can look for people who maybe live closeby to you, I found a lady who lives in Bath, just up the road.
Anyway, I was having a chat with Amy the other day who of course lives in Melbourne and she was saying the Melbourne cup, a massive race was coming up this weekend. I immediately remembered the day I won some omney at the Melbourne Cup way back when I staying with friends in Sydney. It got me to thinking about my trip and in it's honour, I looked up my diary from all those years ago. It was 1999 and I went to stay with friends in Sydney and travelled to Alice Springs and the Red Centre, Melbourne and back to Sydney. I spent my time doing some amazing things and on this day 11 years ago at 4 am I was here...............

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park...........

 I was travelling with a group of International travellers on a 4 night camping and trekking experience. We had been to King's Canyon and The Olga's and Uluru was our final stop. In order to get the most out of our time, we had to get up and be at Uluru by 4am to see the sunrise and walk around the base. The majority of us did this although a few people decided to climb the rock despite the Aborigine people asking you not to do this out of respect for this very sacred site. To them, Uluru is a sacred, living entity where there ancestors worshipped and came from. It hold central significance for them as a people. To me, it would have been like someone coming into my church and defacing the alter, so I didnt climb. The walk around the base was far more rewarding, as you could truly experience the majesty of the place and the individuality of each part. There smooth parts, rough and eroded parts, bit which looked like rolling waves. We even found some cave paintings. It was truly an awesome place.

I will never forget my time there.

Oh and as for the race, as I told Amy, Frankie Detori won and so did I, enough to have a thai meal on my last night with my friends. Speaking of food, Amy is leading a recipe bloghop this weekend so why not join us for some foody fun.

Yes too long have I strayed from blogland in hiding and despair, quite literally. I had lost my blog mojo and wondered if it would ever return, but thankfully here it is back with a vengeance and ready to do posting from now on in. So have u missed me? Loaded question I know but hey worth the asking just so you can laugh and say Nah been too busy, or Have you really been away I hadnt really noticed.
Well anyway here I am and I thought I'd do a resumee of what the last month has held, well maybe not the whole month but some of it.

• I have completed my LSNED minibook and I am really pleased with how it turned out. I didnt really take any photos to go into it but concentrated on the pages and the journalling. Some days I wrote loads and others not so much. It was lovely to see everyone elses LOs though and there are some beautieis around on the blogosphere.

• I have signed up for the new Shimelle class, True Stories. It is a completely NEW class and lasts for 3 weeks. There will be more of a concentration on journalling and it only costs £10.00 or $15.00 if ur in the US/Oz etc. I love Shimelle's classes as you know and to do a brand spanking new one is a bonus. I went on the forum last night to put up my welcome page and it's like a Shimelle stalkers society reunion with so many of us having done her classes before, defo a positive vibe about this class.

• I had triple or quadruple excited about Scrap-a-mia 2011. Remember I went off for a weekend in May to Hampshire for scrapbooking with a variety of fab teachers including Kirsty Wiseman, Cleo Jarvis and someone called Shimelle Laine? Well the girls from Creative Moments have done it again and are organising not only the weekend in Hampshire again but ALSO a weekend in London in April with the fabulous Donna Downey, I love her classes and blog she's fab. Anyway on their facebook page they are running a daily clues to guess the teachers and so far we have Dina Wakely, bestill my beating heart.

• I am working hard on my Cathy Zielske class for Me the abridged version but way behind cos I spent loads of time doing Shimelle's class. I am doing alot of the writing and will do the scrapbooking at a later date.

• I am starting a free class on the 18th October which is very personal to me. It's called Art, healing and health. As many of you know I dont have the best mental health and recently my physical health has been taking a battering as well. Suffice to say I have felt well and truly dejected and depressed in recent weeks and saw this class and thought it may aid in improving my positive thinking. The course involves Art journalling, making an empathy monster and much more. It's being run by Tam an artist based in Brighton and I am really excited about doing something outside my comfort zone.

• If you havent signed up there will be a bloghop over in Oz next Sunday led by the miraculous Amy who whilst being a mum to 2 gorgeous children and wife to the Engineer is literally living in a housing bombsite while their home is completely gutted. If you havent seen waht this can involve pop over. Any male readers there ar epower tools invovled too!!!!!

• Finally for this post me and a fellow blogger have a special party to invite you all to, it will be happening on the 8th November and we will be open to anyone who has a blog a blog to join us. We are putting the finishing touches to the invites and party food at present and their will be some forfeits involved but they are nice ones. So do come back and see what will be happening.

Finally, finally, thank you to everyone who has become a follower over the last few weeks despite there being nothing going one, it was lovely to see some brand new faces when I read my blog again. So will be back soon to tell you more about our party.

Personally I dont recommend this as my body is not in the full prime it used to be in. Is that a muffled laugh I hear? Ok it never has been prime muscle but I would not put you all through the terror of seeing me in my bikini...............althoug we did have a discussion about crocheted bikini's at the weekend as my friend had got one in her crochet book and ther was a story told about crocheted thongs and waterslides. I'll leave the rest to the imagination.
Firstly congrats on Saturdays bloghop, I would say ti was resounding success. So many amazing minibooks and Los, well done everyone and thanx again Mel for organising..........gratutitous applause. Secondly I had a Fab time scrapbooking this weekend at Scrapamia in Southampton. Saw Shimelle and did a minibook class. She is working on a top secret new project for us online class lovers which will be revealed in the not too distant future. Keep ur eyes and ears open. She was in fine form and I had my piccie taken with so u can see proof I saw her. The weekend was fun but tiring mainly cos it was so hot and we had no windows to open. But the event was well organised and I tried lots of new ideas. I will do some posting over the next few days to show u what I did.
Thirdly the next step in my job application is completed as I had to go to Occupational Health today for my check-up. The doctor was happy for me to start ASAP so just the CRB and the references etc to get back now. Things are looking up.

Ok so first off thanx to Mel for playing hostess and being the brains behind the idea. Secondly thanx to Stacy Julian for her free class on Big Picture Scrapbooking. If any of you find this hop fun and would like to make ur own minibook then please go on over and sign up for free. There are loads of fun, free classes to join in with as well as ones to buy. They are all excellent and lots of fun, plus you learn loads too.

So back to the hop. The premise of the hop is to make a minibook all about yourself and here is mine.......................
I stuck some red cardstock to the tin and added ricrac to tie everything together once complete. The letters are Sassafrass and the other elements are Cosmo Cricket and handmade flowers.
I used a tin from Woodware which had a minibook accordian book inside and I made more pages to make it bigger.

The front cover with photo of yours truly. I painted chipboard in blue acrylic paint and used a Sassafrass frame for my picture.
Here are the first 2 pages. The acrylic tags are by Maya road in this book. The writing reads: my lounge, sunsets, beautiful views, spring bulbs, summer, autumn leaves, winter snow, crucifix, books and singing.. The picture is the clematis by my lounge window.

I distressed the edges with Distress inks and attached coloured card and paperstock to make the pages stronger as they were abit flimsy. I then chose a range of photographs which say something about me and which I really love and attched them randomly to the pages, along with some quotes and poetry which I really love.
I love my orginal 80s music and this picture collage shows some of my faves. I still love Depeche Mode and Human League and the album by The The is one of my all time favourites. The quote wouldnt photograph properly but reads ''After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible in music'' by Aldous Huxley.
These ladies are 2 of my closest friends and I am seeing them for the first time in 6 months on Thursday. They are truly inspirational women in so many different ways and have taught me alot about being a Christian, a friend and about myself too. They have supported me through the worst times of my life. The quote reads ''What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in 2 bodies'' by Aristotle.
Oooh David Tennant yummy! Oh sorry ran away with myself then...................anyway, I love DT, most excellent actor and best Dr Who ever. The next picture is my Easter cupcake extravaganza. There were eggs and glitter and I love them. The quote is from Winnie the Pooh a truly wise old bear who says...............'' Just because as animal is large, It doesnt mean he doesnt want kindness, however big Tigger seems to be remember that he wants as much kindness as Roo!''.................awwwwww. I love Pooh.

1. What is your favourite indulgence..................I love going to Starbucks and having a Cafe Latte with their raisin toast and butter. I read a g8 book or magazine or simply watch the world go by.
2. If you had one afternoon to do anything what would you do?................I would drive to Lyme Regis in Dorset and walk along the Cobb. I would stand on the end and breath in the sea air, then go and look for fossils on the beach and treat myself to an icecream with a chocolate flake.
3. What is something you use everyday and could do without but wouldnt want to?..................I could do without car food but Holly and Willow would rebel and as I love them I put up with it.
4. What is something you buy in bulk just to make sure you have it?.....................pasta and tins of chopped tomatoes.
5. Where in your home do you love to be?..........................I love my lounge as it looks out across the other apartments here and when I have the window open I can hear the birds and cows. It is also a g8 place to craft and relax.
6. What in nature most inspires you?............................beautiful sunsets, rainbows, gorgeous views and cute fluffy animals.
7. What store wouldnt you live without?......................unlike my friend who said Asda, I couldnt live without Scrapbook shops or anywhere that sells cute household objects.
8. What is a little thing you do to spread cheer?..............................I love giving flowers and sending cards and I love speaking to my friends on the phone, oh and of course I hope I spread cheer through myblog
9. What is your happiest colour.........................bright pink!!!!
10. What book(s) have change your perspective on life...........................the more I read and learn from the Bible I find myself understanding my life and the life I want to lead. I have also read many other g8 books such as ''The Alchemist'' by Paulo Coelho and Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. I love to read anyway but those 3 stick in my mind the most.
11. What is your favourite season?.................................spring for the spring flowers and baby lambs, summer for beautiful sunny days, autumn for childish leaf scuffing and winter for snow and frost.
12. What is ur fave symbol......................the cross/crucufix. It is such a simple object to look at but carries so much meaning.
13. Do you have a collection?...........................I have several but mainly books. I have books everywhere.
14. What is something you are really good at?..............................singing!
